Oregon students continue to struggle on nationwide reading and math tests despite steadily increasing funding for public education. According to recently released results of the 2024 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), the state’s fourth-graders continue to be among the nation’s least proficient in reading and math. Eighth-grade students fared only slightly better.
According to the Urban Institute, which adjusts states’ test scores to account for demographic factors, including poverty and native language, Oregon’s fourth-grade results are the nation’s worst in math and reading. And its eight-grade performance is among the bottom four states.
